Medieval Codicology and Palaeography Summer School 2013 (Central European University, Budapest)
The aim of the Summer School is to provide practical training at an intermediate level in the basic skills of Latin and Greek palaeography combined with a new approach to codicology based on the latest trends in research. Manuscripts are more than just the physical objects that carry texts and images. Being individually produced and consequently used by generation of scholars, they reflect cognitive processes. While the practical palaeographical seminars focus on the skills of reading and transcribing medieval scripts, recognising features and dating hands, the lectures on codicology and diplomatics will contextualise skills and bring the new insights into the study of the history of medieval book and document production.
Application deadline: 15.II.2013.

22.VII - 26.VII.2013
The Summer School is open to arts and humanities students and scholars registered at institutions in any of the thirty-six COST countries (these are essentially Europe and Israel, but see http://www.cost.esf.org/service/glossary/COST-Countries). The COST Action: IS 1005, ‘Medioevo Europeo: Medieval Studies and Technological Resources’ (www.medioevoeuropeo.eu), in collaboration with the CENDARI project will (www.cendari.eu) host the first of three annual CENDARI Summer Schools in Florence, Italy. The Summer School is focused in addressing the difficulties of medieval scholarly research through the application of digital technologies and methods.
The programme will be a combination of expert speakers, hands-on sessions and collaborative design workshops. All attendees at the Summer School will be invited to present their own research questions and will learn about the digital methods and tools that can be applied. Participants will present their own work and receive feedback from peers; attend seminars by leading authorities in medieval European history, as well as in Digital Humanities; deepen their understanding of the impact of the material record on the practice of history; gain familiarity with powerful new tools in research-oriented information technology.
Application deadline: 31.v.2013.
